Dog Wheelchair Sizing and Measuring Guide

Measure in 3 minutes. We can confirm your size.

What You Need Before You Measure

Soft Measuring Tape

Use a flexible tape for accurate results. If you don’t have one, use string and measure it with a ruler.

Dog Standing Naturally

Measure with your dog standing relaxed on all four legs. Keep their posture neutral, not stretched forward.

Don’t Pull the Tape Tight

The tape should sit snug against the fur, but not compress it. Too tight can lead to the wrong size.

Measure Twice

Take each measurement two times to confirm. If you’re between sizes, write both numbers down.

How to Measure for the Right Wheelchair Size

Back Height
Body Length
Hip Width

Measurement - 1

Back Height

Where to place the tape: Measure from the ground straight up to the highest point of your dog’s back, near the hips.

Start and end points: Start at the floor next to the rear paws. End at the top of the back just above the hind legs.

Common mistake: Measuring to the middle of the back or while your dog is sitting. Your dog should be standing naturally.

Measurement - 2

Body Length

Where to place the tape: Measure along your dog’s body from the chest area to the base of the tail.

Start and end points: Start at the front of the chest (where the harness would sit). End at the base of the tail (not the tip).

Common mistake: Measuring too far forward (neck) or too far back (tail tip).

Measurement - 3

Hip Width

Where to place the tape: Measure across the widest part of your dog’s hips.

Start and end points: Place the tape from one outer hip point to the other, straight across.

Common mistake: Measuring around the hips like a belt instead of straight across.

If you’re not sure about sizing before you order (or if the fit doesn’t look right), email us at contact@whiskerbark.com with:

  • your dog’s measurements
  • a side photo of your dog standing naturally
  • a rear photo (straight behind)

We’ll help confirm the best size and guide you through the next steps.

The tape should sit snug against your dog’s fur without compressing it. If you pull the tape tight, your measurements can come out smaller than they should, which can lead to the wrong size. When in doubt, measure twice and write down both results.

If your dog falls between two sizes, we recommend choosing the size that matches the larger measurement (especially for width/height). A slightly roomier fit is typically easier to adjust than a fit that’s too tight.

Yes, measure over the fur, but don’t compress it. Thick coats can add a little extra volume, so the key is keeping the tape snug and consistent. If your dog has a very dense coat, take a second measurement with the fur gently smoothed down and compare both numbers.

Try measuring when your dog is calm, like after a short walk or meal. Use treats and have someone help hold your dog in a natural standing position (not sitting and not stretched forward). If you can’t get perfect numbers, take a few quick measurements and use the most consistent result.

Yes. If you’re unsure, send us:

  • A rear photo (straight behind)

Always measure with your dog standing naturally on all four legs. Sitting changes the body position and can throw off the numbers.

Most dogs can still use the bathroom normally while wearing the wheelchair. The rear support area is designed to keep the underside clear so your dog can relieve themselves without needing to remove the wheelchair.

If your dog’s routine is different, you can also take the wheelchair off quickly and put it back on after.

No. A properly fitted wheelchair is designed to support the rear while allowing your dog to move comfortably using their front legs. Your dog’s front legs help with forward motion, but the wheelchair reduces strain by carrying rear support through the frame and wheels.

If your dog looks uncomfortable or seems to be working too hard in the front, it’s usually a fit or adjustment issue. Double-check the measurements and strap adjustments.
