With powdery white sand and sparkling emerald waters, Destin is a beach lover’s paradise, but it is a humans-only paradise once you reach the sand. Dogs are not allowed on any beach in Destin, and the same ban applies to every Okaloosa County beach and to Henderson Beach State Park, so there is no dog beach in town. The good news is that we’ve dug up a few tail-wagging gems within an easy drive where your furry friend is more than welcome to splash and play.
Here are the best dog-friendly beaches near Destin, Florida that offer plenty of sniff-worthy adventures, waves to chase, and scenic spots for paw-rents to relax.
🏖 Dog Beach at Pier Park, Panama City Beach
Description:
Located about 50 minutes east of Destin, Dog Beach at Pier Park is the one marked strip of sand in Panama City Beach where dogs are allowed, running west from the Russell-Fields City Pier at 16101 Front Beach Rd. Pups stay on leash here, but they can still wade into the Gulf alongside their humans. It’s well-kept, easy to access, and surrounded by pet-welcoming restaurants and shops.

About an hour west of Destin, Pensacola Beach has two free dog beaches run by the Santa Rosa Island Authority: Dog Beach 21.5 on Fort Pickens Rd and Dog Beach 28.5 on Via de Luna. These are the closest genuine dog beaches to Destin, because closer options on Okaloosa Island, Beasley Park included, do not allow dogs on the sand at all.

Hours: Sunrise to sunset, except during turtle nesting season from May 1 to October 31, when they open at 7 am

Rules: Dogs must be leashed and must wear a current rabies tag; dogs are not permitted on the rest of Pensacola Beach

Description:

Whether your dog prefers a splash in the surf or a breezy beachside trail, a short drive out of Destin turns up something for every tail-wagging traveler. Just remember to pack the essentials like a travel water bowl, a comfy harness, and maybe even a dog car seat cover to keep your ride sand-free!
Two more stretches of coast are worth knowing about before you drive. Gulf County and Cape San Blas, roughly two hours east, allow leashed dogs on all county beaches except St Joseph Peninsula State Park, the Rish Recreation Area and Eglin AFB property. Walton County and 30A are stricter than most visitors expect: dogs need a $40 per year permit sold only to Walton County property owners and permanent residents, not to tourists or renters, on-leash walking is limited to the hours between 3:30 pm and 8:30 am, rabies proof is required, and every permit expires on August 1 no matter when it was bought.
