IVDD in Dachshunds: The Real Risk, and Why the Usual Advice Is Wrong

    Somewhere between 15 and 24 percent of Dachshunds will show signs of intervertebral disc disease in their lifetime, and the breed accounts for roughly 45 to 70 percent of all disc ruptures in dogs. Their relative risk is ten to twelve times that of other breeds.

    Those are alarming numbers, and the reason to lead with them is that the advice built on top of them is mostly wrong. Dachshund owners are told to ban stairs and sofas. The two largest datasets on this point the other way. Meanwhile the things that do associate with risk get almost no attention, and the single biggest one is a decision made before you ever met your dog.

    Why This Breed Specifically

    It is genetic, and the gene is the same one that makes the legs short.

    A retrogene called FGF4, sitting on chromosome 12, causes both the shortened limbs and an early change in the discs. Instead of staying soft and hydrated, the gel centre of each disc dries out and turns cartilaginous during the first year of life. Hardened discs do not absorb shock. They crack, and the contents fire into the spinal canal.

    The timing is worth knowing. Disc calcification in Dachshunds peaks between 24 and 27 months. By the time your Dachshund is two and a half, the discs that are going to calcify mostly have. What happens after that is whether and when one of them fails.

    The typical age for a first episode is three to six years, which catches owners off guard because the dog is in its prime. It can happen from as young as one.

    What the Lifetime Risk Actually Is

    Different studies land in slightly different places, and it is worth seeing them together rather than trusting whichever number a page picked.

    Three independent populations on two continents converging around one in six is about as solid as breed risk data gets. Put the other way, roughly five in six Dachshunds never show clinical signs.

    One counterintuitive finding from a study of 569 dogs undergoing disc surgery: Dachshunds were significantly older at the point of surgery than mixed breed dogs. French Bulldogs, by contrast, presented at a mean of 4.1 years, younger than any other breed in the study.

    Coat Type and Size, Since Everyone Asks

    Wire haired Dachshunds are widely said to be lower risk. The Danish cohort measured it directly: 16 percent in wire haired, 22 percent in smooth haired, 17 percent in long haired, with no statistically significant difference between them.

    So the coat difference is real in one respect, which is genetic. In wire haired lines the FGF4 variant has not become fixed, meaning some wire haired dogs do not carry two copies. In smooth and long haired lines it is close to universal. That matters enormously for breeding, and it matters much less for an individual pet whose genotype you can simply test.

    The Advice That Is Not Supported

    Every Dachshund owner gets the same list: no stairs, no jumping on the sofa, no jumping off the bed, ever. It is repeated with total confidence and it does not hold up.

    The UK survey of 2,031 Dachshunds found that dogs which were not allowed to jump on and off furniture were at increased odds of having IVDD, with a similar trend for dogs not using stairs. The US dataset of 43,517 dogs found regular staircase use among the factors associated with reduced odds.

    Two large independent studies, two continents, both pointing away from the standard advice.

    Now the honest caveat, because it matters. Neither study can establish cause, and reverse causation explains at least part of this. People restrict stairs and furniture because a dog already has back trouble, so restricted dogs are enriched for dogs with problems. Less mobile dogs may also be less fit.

    But the useful conclusion survives all of that: there is no evidence that stairs and furniture cause IVDD in a healthy Dachshund, and no study supports banning them as lifelong prevention. If ramps make life easier for you and your dog, use them. Just do not believe you are preventing a disc rupture, and do not feel guilty about a dog that uses the stairs.

    The exception is absolute and separate. If your dog is recovering from an actual episode, the four weeks of strict confinement your vet prescribes really does mean no stairs and no furniture. Recovery restriction and lifetime prevention are different questions.

    The Risk Factors That Do Show Up

    Activity, in the direction most people would not guess. Dachshunds exercising less than thirty minutes a day had increased odds of IVDD. Those exercising more than an hour had reduced odds. Dogs rated highly or moderately active had lower odds than sedentary ones. The US data agreed independently.

    Neutering, and specifically the timing. In a cohort drawn from the same UK survey, neutered females carried 1.81 times the risk of intact females, rising to 2.12 for females neutered before twelve months. Early neutered males came in at 1.54. The authors were careful to say the decision should be made individually against the other pros and cons, and that is right. But if you are weighing when rather than whether, this belongs in the conversation with your vet.

    The authors were careful, and so should we be: an association in a survey is not a mechanism.

    Weight, with a genuine disagreement in the evidence. The US dataset found overweight dogs at 1.67 times the odds. The UK Dachshund survey found body condition score was not a risk factor. Given what weight does to a dog generally, keeping a Dachshund lean is still the right call, but the specific claim that a heavy Dachshund is destined for a disc rupture is not well supported.

    The One That Matters Most Happens Before You Get the Puppy

    Disc calcification is highly heritable, with estimates between 0.6 and 0.87. That is unusually high, and it means selection works.

    Denmark has run a screening programme since 2003. Dachshunds are x rayed between 24 and 30 months, when calcification has peaked, and only dogs with fewer than five calcified discs are accepted for breeding. Dogs with five or more carry nearly fifteen times the risk of a herniation, and the screen performs well, with a sensitivity of 0.79 and a specificity of 0.91.

    Here is the part that surprises people who have paid for genetic panels. The FGF4 DNA test is a poor breeding screen in most Dachshunds. In smooth and long haired lines the variant is so nearly universal that testing separates almost nobody: its specificity in that study came out at 0.14. Only in wire haired dogs did the DNA result carry useful signal.

    So if you are buying a Dachshund puppy, the question to ask a breeder is not whether the parents have been DNA tested. It is whether they have been x rayed for disc calcification at around two years old, and what the scores were. A breeder who screens by radiograph is doing the thing that actually works.

    What an Episode Looks Like, and When to Move

    Speed matters here more than in almost any other breed, and our guide to a dog whose back legs have stopped working covers what to do in the first hour.

    The first sign is usually pain rather than weakness: a hunched back, a tucked belly, trembling, yelping when picked up, refusing to jump, or simply a dog that will not settle anywhere.

    Then the walk changes. Staggering, crossing the back legs, or standing with a paw folded over onto its top without correcting it.

    Then the back legs stop working, and bladder control often goes at the same time.

    Any of the following is an emergency the same day: unable to walk, dragging or knuckling the back legs, or loss of bladder control. Speed matters, though not in the way the internet says. There is no hard 48 hour cutoff after which surgery becomes pointless, and no veterinary consensus body endorses one. What is true is that delay past roughly twelve hours raises the risk of a serious complication.

    One Dachshund specific note that is worth carrying. In a study of 51 dogs that developed progressive myelomalacia, the most serious complication of severe disc disease, Dachshunds made up 24 of them. This breed is over represented in the worst outcomes as well as the common ones, which is the argument for treating an episode as urgent rather than watching it over a weekend.

    It Will Probably Happen Again

    Recurrence after non surgical management runs at around 25 percent in Dachshunds, and when it recurs it usually does so nearby: 87.5 percent of late recurrences occur within one or two disc spaces of the original.

    That is worth factoring into the surgery decision rather than treating each episode as a standalone event. Surgery, particularly when the surgeon fenestrates the neighbouring discs at the same time, cuts recurrence substantially.

    If Your Dachshund Does Not Get the Legs Back

    A meaningful minority do not, and Dachshunds are the breed you see most often in a dog wheelchair for back legs, for exactly the reasons above.

    A cart is not for the first four weeks, because that period is about restricted activity and a wheelchair is the opposite of it. Beyond that, the one peer reviewed survey of mobility cart users found quality of life improved for 62 percent of dogs and that 79 percent of owners would recommend one, alongside a 60 percent complication rate driven mostly by wounds at the inner thigh, armpit and tops of the paws.

    For a long backed dog the fit question is sharper than for other breeds, because the frame has to support a longer span without letting the spine sag between the contact points. The Whisker Bark adjustable dog wheelchair adjusts in length as well as height and width for that reason.

    Sag between the contact points is the specific failure to watch for, and it is why length adjustment matters more in this breed than height does.

    The five in six Dachshunds who never have an episode are the reason none of this should read as a sentence. It is a risk profile, and most of the levers that matter were pulled before you brought the puppy home.
